I do not usually appreciate covers of songs. Particularly of songs that have been released within the last six months. But oh good golly gosh, Pomplamoose music just makes it so much fun. Covering Lady GaGa’s “Telephone” Pomplamoose is a boy/girl team that has been making a recent splash on the YouTube scene with a series of cover songs such as Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” and Earth Wind and Fire’s “September.” This video, if not seizure inducing, is a clever, collage style video with a firm grasp of Windows Movie Maker. The video itself is mostly shots of the duo recording the song, and cuts to shots of a guy smashing the drums, rocking a bass, and dancing shamelessly along to their production. I’m definitely an all around fan of Pomplamoose’s quirky, pseudo-electonica approach to Lady GaGa, but what makes the video for me is the clear, unabashed joy the two of them have in producing it, and not a frame goes by without a fast-flying shot of the pair smirking with amusement.

The Selby is another example of that ever expanding technological fairy-tale, the potunk blogger who made it big with some really creative idea and is now a part of some big collaboration project. At least this one’s got an interesting idea. The Selby began in June of 2008, when Tod Selby began to photograph artistic friends of his in their home and work space. Now, Selby is doing national ad campaigns for Cole Haan, and photographing hot shot actors for the project. But Selby hasn’t strayed too far from his roots and there are still plenty of shots of the everyman to be found, especially in his older images. I love that Selby incorporates the profession/some characteristic about the subject he photographs into the picture. Selby lists the description, name, and date of the person being photographed before you see the image, so the reader is able to fully understand how Selby manipulates the image to convey their occupation, to give a true feel for the lifestyles they lead. For one image, Selby gives the following caption: “tatsuhiko “ryu” akashi – CEO of MEDICOM TOY CORPORATION at his studio – tokyo – january 26 2010.” In the image, Akashi is barely visible, he’s far in the background at his desk, amidst a flurry of brilliantly colored framed movie posters, fabrics, and other unidistinguishable clutter. I thought it was very clever of Selby to allow the imagery to be more prevalent than Akashi, allowing the reader to associate the work with Akashi, to let the visuals become almost representative of him, because they are the focus of Akashi’s room. Metaphorically, this translates wonderfully with Akashi’s occupation, as the CEO of a toy corporation, where so many small trinkets and visuals truly are representative of him and his work as a company administrator.

Remember those posters that used to hang at the back of your seventh grade science room? You know, with the picture of some guy hang-gliding within an all black frame, with an empty phrase beneath it like “achieve”? There’s finally a public arena to take mocking these posters to the next level. Very Demotivational Demotivational Posters allows you to create your own posters to demotivate yourself, and mock hated motivational office knick-knacks in the process. You upload your own picture, chose your own captions, or you can upload a poster you’ve already found. There are also ways to rate existing pictures, or you can be as de-motivated as you chose, and just look at all the funny posters that people with gumption have uploaded to the site already. The posters range from laugh out loud hilarity to an angry realization that the twelve-year-old you babysit probably constructed it, but on the whole, you get a few good laughs out of it, and I’m giving it a smear of approval. See if this suites your humor tastes; one poster shows a picture of the long-past youthful looking Donatella Versace in a bikini, wrinkled skin a plenty. The caption beneath it reads “UV Rays, Looks like those scientists were right.” Another one shows a security guard in a presumably spanish speaking country (it says securidad on the back of his vest) with the words “real security” also on the back of his vest. The accompanying caption reads “Mexican Security, this one is real.” Viewers be warned, this site isn’t one that limits itself to political correctness, and a few of these posters edge on the side of raunchy, but if you feel that your talent for poster creation should be globally acknowledged, then create good readers, get motivated!

Ok, I’m not quite sure how to feel about this. Charity is good. And lending money to international charities so that they can fund startup businesses and work against poverty sounds very good. But having grown up in an age when I was made to be aware of the uncertainty of any internet source, no matter how seemingly legitimate, I’m uncomfortable with the idea of lending money to strangers via Paypal. Maybe this admittance makes me a hardened cynic, and maybe I’ve watched too many episodes of Seinfeld to know that faux “human funds” are far and away the exception to all of the legitimate charities that have devoted themselves to working towards something, but the next time I’m feeling giving, I’ll probably stick to sending my checks to the local Goodwill. In defense of Kiva, I think that the idea behind the site is absolutely incredible, and it seems to be (seems to be) an innovative way of utilizing social media in a very positive way, and I feel that the convenience, personalization and the site’s refunding policy (it’s a loan-based site, there are no donations) has the potential to gain a lot of involvement and do a lot of good for the world. The site allows participants to view profiles of the causes they might donate to, read the stories of the people who set up each cause. More than this, it’s an incredibly interactive site, and once the participant has made his/her loan, the participant can invite friends to join, to share messages, join groups, to sponsor others, and to create their own lenders page. The site require a minimum of a twenty-five dollar loan, and the loan is refunded to you by affiliate groups that are partnered with these types of organizations around the world. I commend the site’s good intentions, and encourage everyone to look into Kiva’s cause, but, in the end, I think I’ll stick with throwing change in a salvation army bucket, right where I can see it.
So here we are; on one end we’re leaving lights on when we’re going on a holiday, and on the other we’re telling everybody on the internet we’re not home.” While this sort of public humiliation seems a little “public stoning” for my tastes, it’s a very unique idea, and it’s not at all a bad cause, and the site is at the very least, a little bit amusing. Not that amusing. I get a little bored after the third, “I’m at a coffee shop because I need caffeine” type posting, and the site only really holds my interest for the initial five minutes. As for the cause, well, I agree with you Please Rob Me, I think even I’m guilty of throwing information out into the internet while not taking into account that everyone and their mother is capable of tracking me down. It is important to remember that the internet is a source of internationally public information, and while there is an overwhelming amount of this information available, this vastness is not enough to assume our own anonymity, and I do appreciate that the site has managed to convey this message without undertaking a dreaded “talk to your kids” public service announcent style tone, instead opting for a much sharper, tangible display of information to illustrate it’s point. With that said, I am also venturing out to get coffee, but I’m locking my door first, busybodies.

300 Reviews was brought to my attention in a creative writing class as a tangible example of thinking “outside of the box” and all that other English major yib-yab. Fortunately, I like that stuff, and I love the idea that someone created a blog to rate and review real life experiences. This website is actually a simple wordpress blog, but invites writers, journalists, film critics, and creatives of all sorts to review everyday objects and occurrences in three-hundred word increments. The project is a newer creation, and began posting in November of 2009, and will stop posting (allegedly) once they have posted three-hundred blog entries. As 300 Words describes itself, “think Barthes on sweaty Romans in cinema.” It gets better. Such reviews have included topics like “Your Conduct and Aspect on Public Transporation,” “The Annual Christmas Crossing Reenactment,” “Graffiti” and “Watching Your Train Leave You Behind.” Stylistically, every writer (or at least most) writes a different excerpt, so it’s difficult to convey an overarching tone of the site, but in my efforts, I can tell you that all of it is witty and mostly satirical. Many of the posts begin with a general concept, like “Cats” and begin to broaden into a story, though each post makes an effort to keep the concept general enough, and each has colorful details and one-liners to boot. Here’s an excerpt from “Watching Your Train Leave You Behind,” so you can grab a taste. “And as that sight dwindles, what magnifies is the knowledge that, had you set your alarm for the appropriate time, had you the foresight to pack your bag the previous night despite the spinning room, had the traffic lights been any color but red as your friend sped toward the station in his white pickup truck, you might have made it. Don’t think of this scene—of your abandonment, of your inability to keep yourself together—as metaphor. It would be too poignant.” And all in 300 words or less, take that, Twitter.

Essentially, Tobacco Avenue as the site is appreciatively named, is Richmond’s copy of The Onion, and this copy comes through in both format and style. Headlines like “Aaron Gilchrist’s Spectacular Blue Striped Tie To Be Retired” and “Another Horrible Thing Happens On Jeff Davis Highway” run rampant on this site that refers to itself as “Richmond’s most accurate source of misinformation.” Now, I appreciate The Onion, but I’m not over the moon for it, and Tobacco Avenue has a similar blend of over-the-top news bulleteins, but I do appreciate the local landmarks the site works in, and the snippits of truth that they manage to incorporated into a few of the news pieces.

So the story goes, Kate and Samantha were dissatisfied with the stringent, hard-news only approach of the Cornell University paper, and created their own magazine that focused on the more informal feature stories they had been deprived of. href=”http://webkitsch.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/kitsch-cover1.jpg”><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-25" title="Kitsch-cover" Kitsch Magazine<a takes on topics of all sorts, from pop culture and politics to exclusive interviews with the campus "segway guy," and whether the topics are relevant to the general public or not, it's always an entertaining read. While the magazine does publish a lot of pop culture sillies, such as "They're Zombies, They're Strippers- No, They're Zombie Strippers," (an article on Jenna Jameson's recent release Zombie Strippers, in which she both directed and had a lead acting role) it doesn't forget to include meatier pieces. Also in the magazine's archives are pieces on stem cell research, emerging gay representations in pop culture, and the psychological effect of "vanity sizing" on American consumers. In addition to news articles, the magazine also includes original poetry and fiction pieces, opinion and editorial columns, and a few articles offering fashion advice and music reviews. As expected, the magazine's articles are all written in a very conversational, shooting-the-breeze-with-friends-in-a-coffee-shop collegiate tone, and surprisingly, this works just as well for the more serious articles as it does for the articles critiquing skinny jeans and Antonio Banderas' new cologne, "Spirit." Kitsch Magazine is an inventive spin on a literary journal, and the publication does a really nice job of blending traditionally very different mediums into a single magazine. The poetry, fiction, pop culture trash, and more serious topics all work well under the continuity of the authors' tones, and as a reader, I'm excited to explore their always sharp and witty insights, no matter what the topic may be.

Ok, everyone knows what YouTube is. Your grandmother, elementary aged cousin, and preschool acquaintance have all recently uploaded videos of last month’s snowfall on to YouTube. Originality points are lost in this posting, but this one is kinda funny. Really. Wallpaper’s Video Blog follows the half-coherent ramblings of members of the band Wallpaper, producing 3 minute sprockets of faltering story lines and rambling-on monologues, while making time to incorporate the Amazon rainforests and the Pope into the mix. The group essentially produces the types of videos you made yourself in the 7th grade, but even though poor quality seems to be the theme they’re running with, Wallpaper’s videos retain a certain charm. Front man Ricky Reed takes the leading role in most of the video blog sessions, and results in something you’re a little unsure of. Video number 4 opens with Reed’s quest earn more sales for his band’s (Wallpaper) cds than the newly released Grand Theft Auto IV. In response to the failure, Reed hops a plane for the Amazon rainforest, which is immediatly followed up with a promising “to be continued”. The posts are, in actuality, a lame attempt at self promotion, but I appreciate the DIY, minimalist spirit of the posts, and, well, they’re just silly. It’s what YouTube is there for, amateur camera-phone two-minute snippets of things you don’t quite understand. but they’re sort of funny, and you have two minutes to keep you from productivity. To their credit, Wallpaper’s music is of a higher standard than the videos, or at least slightly more clever. Think weird Al Yankovich without all the bad parodies. Songs like “Txt Me Your Love” and their remix of “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell” have a few good one-liners to boot.

And so, submitted for your approval, is my first posted website review, and I am proud to say that it has earned itself a smear of approval. Now, the decision to be excited about this site was not an easy one, but this particular page is one that grows on you with time, just like that sweater Grandma gave you for your birthday. You’re forever unsure of whether its creators should be given a stern talking to, or whether the comfort and silliness the thing offers might just be enough to let it get by. Yeah, this’ll do. Bad Stock Art describes their concept as the “home of the world’s worst photography and illustration for sale”, and in spite of their formulaic “site about crappy stuff I found on the internet” approach, well, it hasn’t gotten old just yet. The idea behind the madness is that the good folks at Bad Stock Art take to the internet daily and search for poor quality, bizarre, dated and just whacked out photographs that were intended for use in advertisements, billboards, and other such media goodies. The first image on the site’s homepage, is essentially a photo of Tom Cruise circa the days of Top Gun. To elaborate, it’s a Young Urban Professional with feathered hair, and a turtleneck/plaid blazer combination who’s taken a break from the stock section of the L.A. Times to seduce you, the viewer. Don’t worry, the aviators (sunglasses) are there. On to image two; The site is also kind enough to list the title that was searched for to find the image, and in the case of the second photo, the search title reads “househusband (part 3)”. Wow that image. Just below the title, a seemingly unnerved young woman saws at her assumed husband’s neck with a matching fork and knife set. The poor sap’s head is set for display upon a dinner plate, and a bottle of unidentified steak sauce is set beside him for flavor. Now, the subject matter is not the strangest aspect of the piece. As always, the devil is in the details, and the faces of the couple in question really make this photo what it is. The wife is a Stepfordized droid. She lays atop her husband adorned in her red cardigan, but no real emotion is to be found on her lily white face. She bears a confused, half smile, comperable to that of the Mona Lisa. Her expression does not reveal her thoughts, or even whether or not she’s smiling, but on second look, you’re pretty sure that whatever she may be thinking of, she hasn’t spent too long thinking about it. The husband’s emotions are an equal mystery, and leaves the reader to decide whether panic or laughter is the subject of the man’s expression. In the end, Bad Stock Art is just as it sounds, a site devoted to the laughable images photographers have put out on the World Wide Web to make a profit, and compiled them for all to giggle at.
